I really enjoy the design of this woman's wardrobe, particularly her hat. This photo was taken in the 70's, I believe, at a party celebrating the illuminati. All of the costume designs were eccentric, but this one is my favorite. It's based off an old painting by Rene Magritte called 'Son of Man'. It's one of my favorite paintings and when I saw it designed into a hat, I was stunned.
I thought about it and I think the reason I enjoy the effort and thought behind it is that they must have considered the original purpose of the painting. They used the shadows of the leaves to cleverly cover up the eyes. Oddly enough, they used a solid three-dimensional apple shape to give it form. The whole thing is symmetrical. Considering the whole wardrobe here, the soft pink shirt and the golden lizard pin make the darker colors of both the natural shadows and the color of the apple and leaves stand out. The leaves are slanted and the stem goes down to the apple, making the lines point to the apple. The main focus of the piece is obviously the apple, which is separated from the leaves to make it stand out more. Considering it's a intriguing clothing design, there is no negative space here and the center of focus is very small. As far as texture is concerned, the leaves look life like and the stem looks ruff. They're both dark and stem-y, which gives the smoothness of the apple contrast.
What makes this such an effective design is how well the apple stands out. Take away the apple, and the whole thing becomes dull and un interesting. The apple is an anomaly. But it works. Not something I'd wear everyday, but it's interesting.
